Vietnam E-Visa Still Processing? What to Do Before Your Flight 2026

Updated May 2026 · 6 min read

You applied for your Vietnam e-visa days ago, your flight is tomorrow, and the status still says "Processing". This is one of the most stressful situations a traveller can face — but don't panic. There are several solutions, and this guide walks through each one.

Why Is My Vietnam E-Visa Still Processing?

The official Vietnam e-visa portal (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) states a 3 working day processing time. In reality, it can take longer due to:

  • High volume periods — peak travel seasons (November–March, July–August) can push processing to 5–7 working days
  • Photo rejection — automated photo checks reject blurry or poorly lit images, adding days
  • Payment delays — international bank transfers can take 24–48 hours to clear
  • Public holidays — Vietnamese immigration offices close for all national holidays
  • Technical issues — the portal occasionally has outages or delays

What to Do If Your E-Visa Hasn't Arrived

Step 1: Check the Status Online (Immediately)

Go to the official e-visa portal and check your application status using your application code. If it says "Processing," proceed to Step 2. If it says "Rejected" or "Payment Failed," you need to reapply or use an alternative.

Step 2: Contact a Visa Agent (Same-Day Solution)

If your e-visa is still processing and your flight is within 24 hours, contact an urgent visa service immediately. NamVisa handles emergency cases where the e-visa hasn't arrived. We can process an alternative solution — typically a Visa on Arrival (VOA) approval letter within 1–4 hours.

Step 3: Prepare a Backup Plan

Even if your e-visa arrives at the last minute, having a backup VOA approval letter ensures you won't be denied boarding. Airlines check that you have a valid visa before letting you board — no visa, no flight.

Can You Fly If Your E-Visa Is Still Processing?

No. Airlines require proof of a valid visa before allowing you to board a flight to Vietnam. A "Processing" status is not a valid visa. You risk being denied boarding at your departure airport if you don't have an alternative visa document.

This is why we strongly recommend having a backup VOA approval letter if your e-visa hasn't arrived with 24 hours to go.

Option A: Switch to Visa on Arrival (Fastest Backup)

If you applied for an e-visa but it's still processing, the fastest backup is a Visa on Arrival (VOA) approval letter:

  1. Contact an urgent visa agent (like NamVisa)
  2. Provide your passport scan and flight details
  3. Receive the approval letter within 1–4 hours by email
  4. Print the letter and bring it to the airport
  5. Present the letter at the Visa on Arrival counter in Vietnam
  6. Pay the stamping fee (usually $25–$50 USD depending on visa type)
  7. Get your visa stamped and proceed through immigration

Important: VOA is only available for air arrivals. If you're arriving by land border (road or train from Laos/Cambodia), VOA is not an option. See the alternative options below.

Option B: Emergency Same-Day Processing

For extreme cases — flight in a few hours and no visa — some agents offer 1-hour urgent processing. This is your last resort. It costs more but works if you have a genuine emergency. Contact NamVisa's urgent service for 1-hour and 4-hour options.

You'll need: passport scan, passport photo (digital), flight itinerary, and payment confirmation. Send these as fast as possible.

What If I'm Already in Vietnam and My Extension Is Still Processing?

If you're already in Vietnam and your visa extension application is still processing:

  • Stay put — while your application is processing, you're legally allowed to remain in Vietnam. The immigration office will note it in their system
  • Get a receipt — make sure you have a stamped receipt from the immigration office showing your application is in process
  • Contact your hotel — they should register your temporary residence each day you stay
  • Don't leave the country — until the extension is approved, leaving would make your overstay official

If you're stuck in Da Nang, HCMC, or Hanoi waiting for a visa extension, NamVisa can help expedite the process.

Preventing E-Visa Delays in the Future

  • Apply early — apply at least 7–10 days before your flight, not 3
  • Use a high-quality photo — professional passport photo or well-lit phone photo against a white wall
  • Double-check your passport number — one wrong digit = rejection
  • Use a credit card — bank transfers can take days to clear
  • Apply during weekdays — applications submitted on weekends don't start processing until Monday
  • Consider using an agent — for peace of mind, a visa agent handles everything and catches mistakes before submission
